The Comforting Savior | Isaiah 55:1

Where do you go when the ground falls out from beneath your feet? Where can you find lasting peace, satisfaction, hope, and comfort in a world that constantly leaves us tired, anxious, frustrated, discouraged, and thirsty for something more?

In this sermon, “The Comforting Savior,” we take a deeper look at Isaiah 55:1 and the beautiful invitation of the Messiah: “Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters.” This message explores the spiritual thirst that exists apart from Christ and the abundant, free life that Jesus offers to those who come to Him.

The imagery of wine and milk in Isaiah 55 points beyond physical pleasures to the abundant life, blessing, strength, joy, and complete satisfaction found in Christ. Most importantly, these gifts are offered without money and without cost. Salvation cannot be purchased through wealth, status, good works, accomplishments, morality, or religious performance. It is grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone, for the glory of God alone.

This sermon also examines the human tendency toward materialism, social status, comparison, pride, and the desire to be more important than others. In the kingdom of Christ, worldly distinctions lose their ultimate significance. Our identity and worth are not determined by our possessions, family name, accomplishments, appearance, wealth, or social standing. Our greatest identity is that we are in Christ and children of God.

But why is Jesus called the Comforting Savior?

Because Christ offers Himself as the answer to our deepest spiritual thirst. He is the source we must continually return to when the world leaves us depleted. Even as redeemed Christians, we experience anxiety, weariness, discouragement, temptation, discontentment, frustration, and weakness. Yet the gospel reminds us that a day is coming when Christ will completely remedy these effects of sin and brokenness.

The sermon also explores the importance of the local church as a place where believers are renewed through God's Word, fellowship, prayer, and the presence of Christ. Jesus is not merely a distant observer or someone who exists to affirm our preferences. He is our life, our Savior, our King, and our friend.

Finally, we consider the incredible comfort of Jesus' words in John 15:15: “I have called you friends.” The Christian life is not ultimately about proving ourselves worthy through our service to God. We serve because we have already received the grace of a Savior who draws near to us, bears our burdens, and gives Himself freely for us.

  • Romans 4:5 — God justifies the ungodly
  • Romans 5:8 — God demonstrates His love through Christ's death
  • Romans 8:1 — No condemnation for those in Christ Jesus
  • Romans 11:36 — To God be the glory
  • Deuteronomy 10:21 — “He is your praise”
  • Psalm 148:13 — His name alone is exalted
  • Revelation 4:11 — God is worthy of glory, honor, and power
  • Luke 12:32 — The Father is pleased to give His people the kingdom
